3.3 Power
Power and might in battle are associated specifically with the right arm and hand: Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you. Be not frightened, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.”; also Psalms 21:9 “Your hand shall find out all Your enemies; Your right hand shall overpower Your foes.” and Psalms 98:1: “Sing to the Lord a new song, for He has worked wonders; His right hand, His holy arm, has won Him victory.”
We find the same phenomenon in other semitic cultures and languages. At least ten centuries before Exodus, we find, certainly written before the 22nd century BCE, in the Akkadian sacred text Enuma Elish, the following sentence about a God ready to go to battle: “He [Marduk] lifted the mace, grasped it in his right hand”. Around the 13th century, we find the following sentence in an Ugaritic text: “His bow he has taken in his hand, also his darts in his right hand.”
