Left and right in the language of rightfulness (!)

3.5 Goodness vs Badness

The right side is seen as better than the left: “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left” (Ecclesiastes 10. 2). In the Temple ceremonies, “every turn must be made to the right of the way” (Yoma 15b, a tractate of the Mishnah). In the morning, according to Halakha you must put your right shoe first. You must pour water on the right hand first before the left.

The left generates bad luck or evil: “Out of the left [North] an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land” (Jeremiah 1. 14). Being left-handed is a physical defect: Ehud the Judge is described in Judges 3:15 as “a man obstructed in the use of his right hand” – which simply means he was left-handed. In fact, as explained in Maimonides’ “Yad”, Bi’at ha-Miḳdash, 9.5, being left-handed disqualifies you from becoming a priest.
